Identification and Placement

Willard Public Schools uses a systematic process for the identification of gifted students in first through sixth grade that is composed of multiple criteria, including objective measures and a competent, professional evaluation. Students are eligible for placement in the gifted program if, based on individual assessments, including alternative assessments, they meet the district's criteria for placement in the gifted program. (See the Gifted Education Manual for more detailed information.)

Referrals from teachers, other personnel, and parents/guardians can also be made for students to be considered for individual evaluation using the above process. Email Laurie Chester at lauriechester@willardschools.net to receive a link to the referral form.

Currently students first through sixth grade who are identified as gifted through the identification process are accepted into the Willard Gifted Education program. They will be given the opportunity to attend Pioneers. The identification process begins in first grade, so students who qualify can begin Pioneers second grade.

Pioneers is the district gifted pull-out program where the students will be pulled out of their regular classroom one day each week to work with the certified gifted educator.

Pioneers Program

The goals of the Pioneers Program will be guided by the Portrait of a Gifted Learner and the Missouri Gifted Learner Outcomes which are aligned to the Missouri Show-Me Performance Standards and met through a variety of individual, small group, and whole group challenging learning activities. Students who qualify for Pioneers will attend the program for one full day each week of the school year.

Pioneers learning experiences and activities will include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Project Based Learning

  • STEM and STEAM activities

  • Challenging Math, Science, and ELA learning

  • Critical Thinking and Logic activities

  • Passion Projects

  • Interdisciplinary Units

  • Social/Emotional Learning centered Gifted Individuals

  • Engaging technology integration

The Pioneers educator has a classroom in both Willard Intermediate South and Willard Intermediate North buildings.

My name is Laurie Chester and I live in Willard, MO with my husband, Jared, and our two sons, Atticus and Amos. Our sons will be in 7th and 8th grade at Willard Middle School this year. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's in Instructional Design and Technology. I’m certified in both Early Childhood and Elementary Education in the state of Missouri. I currently have a Provisional Certification in Gifted Education in Missouri and am taking classes through Truman State University to gain my Gifted Education Certification within the next 2 years. I have been an elementary classroom teacher for 13 years, teaching 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. I taught 3rd grade at Willard Orchard Hills Elementary for the past six years. This will be my 14th year in education and I’m so excited to transition to Gifted Education. I have always had a passion for supporting gifted students and their creativity and love of learning! I am excited to learn and grow as a gifted educator so I can best support our district's gifted students.
